George Westinghouse, Jr. (October 6 1846arch 12, 1914) was an American entrepreneur and engineer who invented the air brake rail and was a pioneer in the electrical industry. Westinghouse was a major competitor of Thomas Edison in the early implementation of the American system of electricity. Westinghouse system using alternating current ultimately prevailed over Edison's insistence on direct current. In 1911, he received AIEE Edison Medal "for meritorious achievement in connection with the development of the light system of alternating current.
The early years
Westinghouse is the son of a machine shop owner and was talented at machinery and business. He was only 19 when he created his first invention, the rotary steam engine. At 21, he invented a substitute for "car", a device to guide derailed railroad back on track, and a frog reversible, a device used in a railroad switch to guide trains one of two tracks.
Thomas Edison was one of its major competitors because they were both very clever inventors. That's when he saw a train wreck where two engineers saw each other, but were unable to stop their trains in time using the existing brakes. Brakemen ran from car to car, on the catwalk at the top of the car, appling the brakes manually on each car.
Westinghouse Steam and Air Brakes (U.S. Patent 144.006)
In 1869, at the age of 22, he invented a brake system of railway using compressed air. The Westinghouse system used a compressor on the locomotive, a reservoir and a special valve on each car, and a tube along the length of the train (with flexible connections) who both filled the tanks and the braking test, the application and release the brakes on all cars simultaneously. This is a failsafe system, in that any disruption or disconnection in the tube train brakes of the train. It was patented by Westinghouse March 5, 1872. The Westinghouse Air Brake Company (WABCO) was subsequently organized to manufacture and sell the invention of Westinghouse. It has been almost universally adopted in time. Modern trains use the brakes in various forms based on that design.
Westinghouse sued numerous improvements in railroad signals (and using oil lamps) and in 1881 he founded the Union Switch and Signal Company to manufacture its signaling and switching inventions.
